Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 Single Action Revolver with Factory Letter
Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 Single Action Revolver with factory letter. The S&W factory letter states that this revolver was shipped to S&W distributor M.W. Robinson in New York City on March 26, 1880. The letter indicates that the revolver had a 6-inch barrel chambered for the .44 Russian cartridge, a nickel-plated finish and checkered, hard rubber, grips. The revolver has a round butt, nickel-plated barrel, cylinder and frame. The barrel latch, hammer and trigger guard have a casehardened finish. The two-piece, black, hard rubber grips are checkered and have the S&W monogram in a circle at the top. The top of the barrel rib is roll-stamped with the S&W address and 1865-1871 patent dates in two extended lines. The serial number, "8640" is visible on the butt, the rear face of the cylinder and on the inside of the barrel latch. All of the visible serial numbers match.

Gauge: 44 Russian
Finish: nickel
Grips: black hard rubber
Serial Number: 8640

Very fine. The revolver retains approximately 90% of the original nickel-plated finish. There is some scattered flaking on the sides of the frame. The hammer and trigger guard retain about half of the original casehardened finish. The hard rubber grips are in very good condition with some minor handling marks. The barrel legend and serial numbers are crisp. The action is tight and functions fine. This is a very fine example of a S&W New Model No. 3 revolver chambered for the S&W .44 Russian cartridge.
