Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 Frontier target model revolver 44-40 cal factory special ordered exhibition engraved by Gustav Young, blued finish, pearl grips shipped Feb. 17th 1887 and delivered to Ira Paine,Providence, R.I. Serial #1653 originally one of a pair, its mate numbered 1654. Ira Paine was a champion shooter who shot at exhibitions and held many records and titles. In a book entitled “Bullet Holes” published by S & W in 1915 Douglas Wesson explained that Paine introduced revolver shooting to his show and exhibition program while in Europe in 1881. Paine consulted with Gastine Renette and after exhaustive tests theysettled on the S & W New Model No. 3 as their ultimate choice for an accurate revolver. Paine traveled thru out Europe and used S & W in exhibitions of trick shooting which so impressed the King of Portugal he wasknighted as a Chevalier of an ancient Military order. He performed for the Czar of Russia, King of Spain and large audiences similar to Buffalo Bill and Anne Oakley who were performing in Europe at the same time.
