Improved design of the original Model 3, Smith & Wesson's first top break, automatic ejection revolver produced from 1878 to 1912. Top of barrel rib is marked with the two line address and patent dates: "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT'D JAN 17 & 24. 65. JULY 11. 65. / AUG 24. 69. APR 20. 75 FEB 20. & DEC 18. 1877 REISSUE JULY 25. 1871." This model features blade front and notched rear sights. Six shot fluted cylinder with automatic ejector. Casehardened trigger guard, trigger and hammer, with remaining surfaces blue. Matching serial number on the butt, cylinder and barrel latch. Fitted with checkered walnut grips. The top of the left panel has the number "19" stamped upside-down and "64" is stamped on the bottom of the right panel. Most likely military rack numbers.

Condition: Fine. The revolver retains 60% faded original blue finish mixed with areas of smooth brown patina, showing scattered minor dings and scratches. The hammer retains 50% original case colors, there are strong original case colors in protected areas of the trigger guard and the balance has a smooth mottled brownish patina. The grips are a bit ill-fitting and remain good with a minor chip and crack at the top of the left panel, a minor chip on the right toe, scattered dings and crisp checkering. The markings are crisp. The action is very good.
