Smith & Wesson New Model #3 Frontier Single Action revolver, scroll engraved, back strap inscribed “Maj. Gordon Lillie “Pawnee Bill”, 44-40 cal., 6-1/2” barrel, checkered hard rubber black grips, #1147. This gun is accompanied with a leather double loop holster and tooled leather cartridge belt in overall fair + to good worn condition with the holster trimmed in sewn leather thong edging. The gun itself is in original good to very good condition with approx. 40% thinning nickel, some scattered surface erosion and pinprick pitting; sharp markings, good action, bore and grips. Factory letter indicates this gun was shipped on August 31, 1895 to E.K. Tryon Co., Philadelphia, PA with barrel length, finish and grips confirmed. Documentation includes a 1936 dated letter to Mr. Morgan Chaney, St. Angelo, Texas from Bob “Breezy” Cox stating that when Mr. Cox was a young boy, he worked as a stable hand for Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill and that in 1925-30, he worked for Pawnee Bill in his show but that when the Depression hit, he was let go and given this gun by Pawnee Bill who told him it was a gift originally from Buffalo Bill. This letter is on Livingston (Montana) Round-up Association letterhead and envelope addressed Morgan Chaney. Also included is an original photo of Cox riding a horse in an arena, a 1935 newspaper and program about a Rodeo and an original Pawnee Bill’s Wild West Sow official route book for the Season of 1893; included in this lot is a 1911 copy of the book “Thrilling Lives of Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill” by Frank Winch, a 1910 original program, a Pawnee Bill signed original letter to Breezy Cox and a framed photo of Buffalo Bill at Pawnee Bill’s Ranch, Pawnee, Okla. Little John’s originally sold this set in 2001 and it is now offered for sale from the estate of a well-known collector of historic Western and Military-associated firearms. Est.: $5,000-$10,000.
