Smith & Wesson Double Action Frontier Revolver with Factory Letter
The included factory letter (dated February 28, 1990) lists this number revolver as having been shipped 9as a blued finish specimen) on May 15, 1885 to M.W. Robinson (S&W's largest New York City distributor) and subsequently returned to the factory for refinishing in October, 1955. The records indicate that this revolver was one of twenty, all with five inch barrels and plain blue finish. The top of the rib is marked with the two line address/patent dates. Matching serial number on the butt, rear cylinder face, barrel latch and top strap, with the factory rework star on the butt. Pinned front and notch rear sights, nickel finish with blue trigger guard and casehardened trigger and hammer, and fitted with checkered hard rubber grips with S&W logo at the top (right panel has the number "9178").

Condition: Factory replated (documented-see above). The revolver retains 99% of the factory nickel finish with some minor handling marks and a noticeable cylinder drag line. The grip straps have a slight frost patina. The trigger and hammer retain traces of the case colors, otherwise a gray patina. The grips are fine showing some fading with some minor handling marks mostly near the bottoms. The checkering is crisp.
