Smith & Wesson DA fourth model top break revolver, .32 cal., nickel finish, factory gold medallion pearl grips, period inscribed on backstrap “Ophie Ruth”, #216704, with accompanying grey soft purse holster with flap cover and green lining. This gun is in overall good condition showing approx. 30% original nickel finish with balance gone to a grey patina and scattered areas of erosion and pitting, good action and markings, bore may clean to good, very good grips. Accompanied by factory letter indicating shipment on August 31, 1900 to N. A. Mingledorff and confirming the pearl grips as factory provided but noting that the factory invoice “is too badly water damaged to read the shipping location and any details except that it was fit with pearl stocks”. This lot is also accompanied by a binder of research related to the inscription and in summary, it appears the Mingledorff family was long of Savannah, Georgia and that Victor Austin Mingledorff married Ophelia Ruth Smith on Dec. 5, 1900. Interesting copies of Ophelia’s diary are included as well as other materials with an old cabinet photo of ladies in front of a residence with some identified. There is also a copy of Ophelia’s death certificate. A nice, untouched small frame Smith & Wesson with history to an early Southern Belle. Est.: $500-$1,000.
