Smith & Wesson .38 Model 2 Single Action Revolver
Smith & Wesson .38 Single Action 2nd Model (Model 2, 2nd Issue) revolver with 4 inch barrel and bright nickel finish. This early .38 S&W Center Fire model was only made from 1877-1891. The serial number on this example is 72410 which puts it in mid-production circa 1884. The .38 Single Action 2ndModel was one of S&W’s more powerful pocket revolvers. It found favor with urban dwellers in the East as well as a backup arm for those on both sides of the law on both sides of the Mississippi River. Itwas also a favorite of gamblers and ladies of the evening. This model was small enough to be discretelycarried, yet powerful enough to get the job done when needed. This example displays a full, bright nickel finish with standard S&W monogram hard rubber checkered grips. To load this revolver, the barrel latch containing the rear sight is lifted up releasing the barrel which is then tipped down. As the barrel is lowered the ejector automatically moves out of the cylinder to eject the fired cartridge cases and then snaps back into its recess so the cylinder can be reloaded. This mechanism was designed by S&W and allowed for very fast loading and ejection. S&W serial numbered all the major parts on their revolvers and this one shows matching serial numbers on the frame, barrel, barrel latch and cylinder. The mechanism on this example works perfectly and the barrel to frame lockup is tight. The rifled bore is fine and the hammer engages as it did when new. Overall, a stunning revolver from a very turbulent time in American history. Serial Number: 72410. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
