Smith & Wesson 2nd model American, .44 caliber, single action revolver. Rare factory 6” barrel, nickel plated, carved ivory grips on right side showing Mexican snake and eagle, serial #30957. Factory letter confirms barrel length, shipped January 30th, 1874 to M. W. Robinson, New York. There is no mention in the factory records for plating, but the New York distributors generally preferred to plate and grip their own guns as it was more cost effective to do so. The revolver shows approx. 20-30% of the old nickel plate which is peeling and lifting. The areas where the nickel has lifted have gone to a dark brown patina. There is somescattered erosion and pinprick pitting. The barrel address is slightly light but visible. The carved ivory grips show a well-detailed Mexican snake and eagle, and show some slight cracking and shrinkage from wear. Some large chips and losses on right. Grips show a nice patina. Action is good, bore fair to good. A very attractive Smith & Wesson that was shipped South and a very rare factory confirmed barrel length. Est: $1,250 - $2,500
