Smith & Wesson #2 Army Revolver serial #14584, 32 rim fire caliber, period scroll engraved in Nimschke or New York style, barrell period shortened to 2 7/8" and grip carved on interior "W.H.C. 1st N.C. CAV" in block letters. Accompanying research indicates there was a Captain William H. Cheek who served in the gallant 1st North Carolina calvary being twice wounded he rose to the rank of colonel and was captured near Petersburg, VA subsequently spending the latter part of the civil war in a union prison. The original engraving is fairly profuse and the pistol retains faint traces of blue drifting to patina. The metal surfaces show some light erosion and pin-prick pitting, the patent markings are visible on cylinder, edges good, grips good, and the revolver shows honest wear from being carried on the person. The action is tight and good overall. A high quality French fitted and aligator hide covered 20th century case is include which shows some age and is in very good condition. An interesting Civil War Revolver which made an excellent hide out or "Belly Gun". Est. $1,500 - $3,000
