<Our item number 129342><B>Smith, Joseph.</B> &#40;1805-1844&#41; American religious figure who founded the Latter Day Saint movement, also known as Mormonism. Smith&#39;s followers declared him to be the first and true latter-day prophet, whose mission was to restore the 1st century Christian church. This restoration included the establishment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the publication of the Book of Mormon. Smith also became a political and military leader in the American Midwest. In February 1844, Smith declared his intention to run for President of the United States. On June 27 1844, he was killed by a mob as he awaited trial for ordering the destruction of the newspaper and press of the The Nauvoo Expositor, which was inimical to Smith.<BR><BR>DS as Mayor of Nauvoo City &#40;Illinois&#41;, 2¾&#34; x 7¾&#34;, Nauvoo City, 1844 June 5.
