Smith, L. Richard. CAPTAIN JAMES COOK - THE ROYAL SOCIETY COOK MEDAL. The Wedgewood Press. 1982. 12mo. 39 pages. Sydney. original printed card covers. b&w illustrations. Fine. Limited edition copy #136 of 250. Signed by the author. This book presents the manner in which the Royal Society of London honored the man who was arguably its most famous Fellow. The greater part of the story has been drawn from the contemporary records and documents held by the Royal Society of London. In 1848 Charles Weld, the Assistant Secretary and Librarian to the Royal Society, wrote "in looking over some old papers in the Archives, I was so fortunate as to find several interesting documents relating to Captain Cook's medal, which are now bound, and safely deposited in the Library." This volume has been extensively used, as have the minute-books of the Council of the Royal Society for the years 1780 to 1801. Extracts from these manuscripts which are now in the Library of the Royal Society are used by kind permission of the Council. Details the gold medal in the collection of Queen Elizabeth II are used by Royal permission. The author, throughout the text, used the more readily understood phrase member of the Royal Society in place of the more correct Fellow of the Royal Society. Also, in the cause of easy understanding, referred throughout to bronze medals, whereas these were in fact bronzed. An interesting history behind the commemoration of one of the world's most recognized explorers. Lot weight: 0 lbs 3oz. Subject(s): Australian Medals.
