Small rare American California knife by Chevalier New York. 11-3/4” overall, 7-1/4” clip blade with sharpened false edge. 3/16” stock. Marked on the blade flat, “Chevalier California Knife”. Blade is in excellent condition, good edge, and very light patches of pitting. On the back ricasso is the number “136” associated with the Bob Ables collection. Hilt is one piece curved stag with thick brass crossguard with integral ferrule and brass pommelcap. The knife tang is peened to the center of the pommel cap. Original leather sheath with brass throat and belt loop. Circa approx. late 1840’s to early 1850’s. Hugh Hayes Collection. Est.: $5,000 - $10,000
