Colonial Era Small Bronze Signal Mortar Ex: Guthman

c. 17th-18th Century, Small Portable Bronze Signal-Saluting Mortar, Very Fine.

Portable bronze Saluting Mortar, also possibly used for the testing of gunpowder. It measures 3.5” x 3” being marked “S L I R” “M” “A”. This example is from the celebrated Guthman Collection Auction (no tag present). This type was used as a tactical field weapon, employed to protect an army during its deployment, and to prepare for its advance by firing small shot into enemy formations. Barrels of this form were made of both iron and brass (bronze). These barrels were also very popular on Naval ships. For their size, they were very loud and would save on gunpowder. It was a common practice for a ship to sound a salute upon coming into port so a launch could be sent out to ascertain the wellness of the ship & crew, so as to prevent the potential outbreak of a disease. A formidable weapon that served many purposes. Reference, Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution, by George C. Neumann and Frank J. Kravic, 1975, page 15.
