The Ming Dynasty was the ruling dynasty of China from 1368 to 1644. It was the last dynasty in China ruled by ethnic Chinese (Hans). There were approximately 200 million Chinese at the time. The Ming period saw dramatic advances in China, both in the country's defences, as well as commerce. During this period a vast navy was created and the standing army numbered over 1 million troops. In the 16th century there was a tremendous boost in the economy through trade with the Spanish and Portuguese. Trade with European powers as well as Japan, brought massive amounts of silver into China. Ceramics were a strong trading commodity for the Chinese. Such was their quality, that they conquered the Eoropean markets and were copied in manufacture by the Islamic peoples.
