Small Cents 1955 DDO Mint State 64. RB

Small Cents 1955 Doubled Die Obverse. Mint State 64. Red and Brown. Virtually full golden rose mint luster remains, with only a bit of dark toning at the raised edge and outer rim, accounting for our conservative "Red and Brown" classification. There are no outwardly apparent contact marks or carbon spots, merely a few scattered darker toning breaks in the mint luster which do not detract. It truly has a spectacular look, and would be a handsome addition to any collection of "Red" Mint State Lincoln cents. At this grade level, or higher, few exist.

The supervisory personnel at the Philadelphia Mint were aware of the die doubling error before the coins were sent out. All were produced in a single night shift in an estimated quantity of around 20,000. An alert press operator noticed the doubling and notified management of the mistake. However, because they were mixed with many thousands of other normal cents as they were being struck, they could not be gathered for melting. Rather than melt down an entire night's Lincoln cent production, the decision was made to send them out. Most went to the Boston area, where they circulated freely, and it was some time before sharp-eyed collectors noticed there existence. When they were discovered, few had escaped circulation, accounting for their rarity today in the superlative condition of the coin we offer. This one looks like it just came fresh from an original roll, with a blush of toning. Few survivors can compare to it. Estimate $3,500.00-$4,000.00
