SmCts 1873 Doub LIBERTY S-1 PCGS AU55

Small Cents 1873 Closed 3. Doubled LIBERTY. Snow 1. PCGS graded About Uncirculated 55. Type 1, Class V, the rarest and most desirable of the doubled LIBERTY varieties. Smooth, problem-free medium reddish brown surfaces still have a bit of mint red clinging to the devices, mostly on the reverse. Nearly four full diamonds show on the warbonnet ribbon. Close inspection reveals only the faintest trace of rubbing. Without magnification, this example appears solidly Mint State.

LIBERTY and Liberty's profile are boldly doubled, a result of pivoted hub doubling. There are other varieties with vestiges of doubling, but this one, with all seven letters sharply doubled is the monumentally important one. Commonly referred to as the "King of Indian Head Cents," it is more coveted in high grades than the 1877 or 1909-S and much more elusive. The total number of known examples stands at fewer than 100, most of those in lower grades. This borderline Mint State example is a wonderful find, and considering the expense of strictly Mint State certified examples, offers an excellent opportunity to procure a specimen of this important rarity for a comparatively modest sum. Estimate $4,500.00-$5,000.00
