(Walt Disney Productions, 1959) Pen & ink and animator’s gouache on 12.5 x 16” registration-punched celluloid, depicting a key scene in the story, where the owl and squirrel create a “mock prince” as the fantasy dancing partner for Aurora. Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas were recruited together out of Stanford University in 1934 by Walt Disney, and both remained with him for the rest of their long careers, contributing to more than 40 Disney animated works. Both are listed as “directing animator” on Sleeping Beauty, and of any two animator names that belong together on a Disney artifact, it would be these. Tipped onto a modern color-Xerox of the matching background. Identified on margin “19”, light normal waving to celluloid in painted area, though no flaking or cracking, Excellent.
