Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite showing a newly emancipated slave teaching three ‘white slave’ children to read, captioned in the lower border, “Learning is Wealth. Wilson, Charley, Rebecca & Rosa, Slaves from New Orleans.” Published by Charles Paxson of New York circa 1864, with text on the back reading, “The nett [sic] proceeds from the sale of these photographs will be devoted to the education of colored people in the department of the Gulf, now under the command of Maj. Gen. Banks.” In very good condition, with a horizontal crease passing through the upper third of the photo. A scarce and desirable image.
