Slaves for Galveston. Letter, 2 pp., Ga
Slaves for Galveston. Letter, 2 pp., Galveston (Texas), June 17, 1856, from Oliver (Hartley) to cousin in Morgantown, N.C. "...You will have received my last letter...in which I advise you of the particulars of difficulty in getting opportunity to send you darkies...I will send all the darkies if a good opportunity occurs. I had a chance to hire Jim to the U.S. for three months at $1.50 a day to go to the Sabine to tend masons building a lighthouse...but was afraid to take the responsibility with so valuable a darkie. I had an offer of $950 a piece for two shares of city stock...Told the bidder the danger of war was over, that Buchanan was nominated and I asked $1,000. Have not seen him since...." The lighthouse referred to is the Sabine Pass Lighthouse, built 1856, the year of this letter, and is still standing today. It apparently was built with slave labor. Letter written on blue paper. About fine, with superior content.
