Slavery be not extended.... Letter to H
Slavery be not extended.... Letter to Hamilton Fish, Gov. of New York, 1849, from Samuel Martin, Campbells Station, Tenn. In its 3 pp., Martin sets forth arguments for establishment in New York of an agricultural school, as an example to the other states. He had tried to accomplish this in Tennessee without success. An immigrant from Ireland, Martin became a successful businessman, owner of ten lots, many slaves, a store and tavern, postmaster in Kingston, and friend of Andrew Jackson. Requesting that Fish also present this letter to Pres. Fillmore, Martin urges that "slavery be not extended. These Southern folks were the cause of the war with Mexico...Three-quarters of Tennessee (if) the matter is explained to them, will say amen to me...." With integral address-leaf with "10" postage. Fine.
