<B>North Carolina Slavery Hiring-Out Manuscript Document.</B></I> One page, 7.75" x 5", "<I>County of Chowan</B></I>", [N. Carolina], Jan. 1, 1855, a contract binding William McCoy to pay $175.00 to W.E. Bond "<I>for value rec'd in present year's hire of his blk-smith John.</B></I>" McCoy is also required to "<I>furnish said slave one winter & one summer suit of clothes, two prs of shoes, a hat, blanket & one pair of stockings, not to carry or send him out of the county of Chowan, nor by water nor employ him at any fishery...</B></I>" Two vertical folds, and lightly toned with docket on verso. Near fine condition, an unusual slave item made so by the terms and conditions imposed.
