In part, "...Murrell had carried away a free born Mulatto boy from Peter Clark in Stokes County...I sent an officer, had Murrell Arrested...Knott, and a John Holiday...were witnesses for the State...Some time ago, said he [Murrell], I bought a yellow Mulatto boy from Peter Clark named Michael about 6, or 7 years of age...I paid my money and carried the said boy into the State of Georgia...I asked him, Sir, did you apprehend that this boy was a slave and did you take a bill of sale from Peter Clark...He answered, No...I said to him, Mr Murrell you have committed a high misdemeanor against the laws of this state in presuming to purchase a free born orphan...Tilley Clark...swore she saw her father receive either 30 or 40 dollars from Murrell for the Mulatto boy...my duty bound me to commit him to jail..."
