Slave prices in Memphis are high.... Letter, 1855, from Thomas Homer to brother in Little Reed, S.C., 2 pp., with envelope. Writes of yellow fever in Memphis: "17 to 18 dying a day. Memphis has four railroads, cotton crops are large, 175 bales. John is pleased with his move as overseer. His Negroes has been quiet, but they have had many protection meetings. Negroes is high, about $1,000 for women and $1,200 for men...Negroes and land is a tall price...." Envelope has George Washington preprinted stamp. Both fine.
