Slave Trade Autograph Note Signed. One page, 8" x 7", Framed, Orange, Virginia, July 16, 1831. A slave trade document for a 12-year-old girl named Anna. The note reads, "Received of Wm B. Bell two hundred and eighty eight dollars and fifty cent in full pay for a negro girl Ann 12 years. The rite and title of the girl I do warrant and defend against the claim or claims of all and every person. I do also warrant the above named girl to be sound and healthy, witness my hand and seal this 16th day of July, 1831." Signed "Asa Brockman." Young female slaves were worth a considerable premium as shown here. Additional Brockman Family slave trade documents may be referenced at the University of Chicago. This is a rare peek inside the everyday business of slavery.
