Rare wrought iron slave shackle probably made by an African blacksmith in Charleston, South Carolina. 21'' in length, comprised of four links and a forged padlock. Deaccessioned from a museum with a letter of authenticity: “Hand Forged…Slave Shackle: Circa 1830’s…Probably made around Charleston, SC area due to the highly skilled Africans who were Blacksmith on the large plantations. Extremely rare and no other duplicate are known in any private collections or museum collections…” Normal light rusting due to age. Very good condition.
