Slave Documents 1832//1862, Valuable Slave
COLLECTIBLES Slave Documents 1832//1862, Valuable Slave Document Holding consisting of nine pieces including an 1832 Slave Bill of Sale for one "Louisa" out of Washington, D.C. of all places, an 1835 list of property, including 98 slaves who are noted with the live stock, for the Woodbine Plantation, probably outside Charleston, and an 1840 South Carolina inventory of the estate of one William Boyd which includes in the listing Boyd's six slaves noted immediately after his horses. The offering continues with an 1841 Steamboat "Augusta" letter containing a bill and a long letter regarding Negro clothing and mentions conditions in New Orleans, LA, an 1846 Alabama bill of sale for one Negro man, an 1849 inventory for the estate of Wm Stringfellow in which his 43 Negroes including those willed to others and whether they are "unsound", and an 1852 valuation and listing of the Hare estate in North Carolina including 55 slaves. The grouping concludes with an August 28, 1861 Chattangooga, Tenn. letter to a J.H. Gant from his plantation overseer or sales agent on how to maximize his return on the auctioneering of his property by "lumping" his slaves with the mules and horses and, furthermore, putting shills in the audience to raise the price (The coldness and crassness is stunning) and finally an 1862 Richmond, VA letter discussing the family slaves. An important and disturbing archive in F-VF condition. Estimate US$750-1000
