Measures 7 3/4" by 4 1/4." With mounting 8 1/2" by 5 1/8." This cabinet card by W. S. Walbridge depicts the citizens of Slaughter who lived there from 1867 to 1893. Its mounting shows wear at the corners, fingerprints and foxing. The photo is yellowing and fading beginning on the right side and moving inward to the center. Noteworthy, there are only 7 women, 7 children and 1 dog in the photo. Only 1 of the children is female. This photo evidences the scarcity of women in the West. The town was named after the 1856 Indian War hero Lt. William A. Slaughter because he died in battle near the site that would later become the town, but later its name changed in 1893. Residents thought it embarrassing when arriving train visitors heard the cry "This way to the Slaughter House [Hotel]." Since the area's main crop was hops, it adopted the new name from another hop growing area - Auburn, New York. Thus, Slaughter became Auburn.
