c1880 Beautiful seal stamp from Wells Fargo & Co. Express, extremely rare. Carved wooden handle with brass head, approx. 4" high. The ghost town of Skull Valley is about 12 miles due west of Prescott in the northern end of the state. Skull Valley acquired its grisly name from the skulls and bones left from an Indian battle in the early 1800`s. The Yavapai (Apache) and the Pima (Maricopa) fought over several wrongs done by the Yavapai to the Pima, even after the Pima had helped them with food and water. An account said that only the most fleet of foot among the Yavapai escaped. There is another account of a battle in 1864 between the Indians and whites, and the bodies were left where they fell. The Skull Valley Post Office was in service from 1869 to 1888. Bud Bassett Collection - HKA#65305
