Skokomish Twined Storage Basket
Circa 1910
Height 13 3/4 in. Diameter 17 in.

This large storage basket is a classic example of the technical and artistic features common to Skokomish baskets. They preferred plain twinning and large cylindrical forms. The layout usually followed a pattern of vertical geometric design zones and a narrow rim band. This example has a complex design of paired rectangles within rectangles. These vertically stacked elements have been described as "boxes" or "fishnets" by the weavers. Small quadrupeds circle the rim. "The downward-angled tails indicate wolves in the Skokomish and other Salish traditions."

Provenance
Sandra Horn, Mill Valley, California.
