The artist and by direct family descent to the present vendor.

There is another small version called 'An Allegorical Picture of Bristol' which is dated 1917, with the Bristol City Art Gallery, It is currently on loan to the Council House .

Many of the figures are recognisable Bristol historical figures. They also appear in the large 'Some who made Bristol famous' which hangs in the front hall of the Bristol City Art Gallery. It is John Cabot in the front of yours, with a map.

It doesn't depict a particular occasion. It is purely imaginary and quite typical of Board's work. There was a great deal of civic pride in Bristol 100 years ago. Board did not make a large version of this composition.

Figures present are as follows: Cabot, Colston, Canyage, Chatterton, Southey, Lawrence, Muller, Macuady, Mrs Robinson, May Cafoenth, Hannah More, Hugh Conway, John Addington Symonds.
