comfortably but not conclusively an anonymous Southerner with a lengthy penciled sentiment written in the case that reads, May The 10th 1861/My Darling ????/May the Lord of heaven/and earth protect and bless thee/There is a tide in/affairs of men which taken/at the flood leads to fortune/Shall I ever see my dear/??? any more. Sadly, the forlorn soldier has omitted his name, making a positive identification impossible.

The erstwhile civilian turned recruit is wearing a generic shirt and cravat beneath a gray military vest with high dome buttons that are unreadable. He sports a pair of Colt revolvers along with a Smith & Wesson #1, tucked into a wide, light colored belt that appears to have an unidentified oval plate. What first appears to be a long saber bayonet is actually the castoff blade of a M1850 militia sword missing its hilt, pommel, and cross guard. An outstanding early ambrotype with considerable character lacking only a solid identification.

Condition: Plate is near EXC. with minor "peppering" in upper field near the mat opening. Clarity is strong but not razor sharp (the pistols are fairly washed out). Housed in a partial composition case containing the religious prose.
