All papers in this lot are made out to Sergeant/ First Sergeant William Rainey, who spent his career as an NCO in the 24th, one of the "Buffalo Soldier" regiments. The papers cover a period from 1876-1881, 1881-1886, 1888-1893, 1893-1898, 1898-1901 and 1901-1904, with the envelope postmarked 1907. The discharge papers consistently describe Sgt. Rainey as an excellent Non-Commissioned Officer. The older papers and envelope are in fair condition, with some absent sections, tears and illegible markings, the other letters are good or better.
