Six 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition Pennants. The Panama-Pacific International Exposition was the 1915 world's fair held in San Francisco, California. It took over three years to construct. The fair was a huge event for the city because it had been virtually destroyed by a great earthquake in 1906. The exposition was set up to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal, and it also commemorated the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the Pacific Ocean by Balboa. The city constructed a 635 acre area on the mud flats between Van Ness and the Presidio. This lot features six pennants which were purchased as souvenirs at the exposition. <r<r The first pennant features the official seal of the exposition which depicts Columbia holding the symbols of peace and victory; the olive and the palm branch. She is standing on top of a globe as two ships sail around her through a canal. The pennant is in fine condition except it has been stained badly by a red or pink liquid. The white areas on the flag are bright pink. <r<r The second pennant is a deep black color and features gold lettering, the letters read, "San Francisco -1915-". Next to the text is a picture of the California Building and some flowers encircling the official seal of the exposition. Every state in the union had a building built for it at the exposition. The California state building was the largest state or republic building ever constructed for a world's fair. All 58 California counties were represented on 5 acres of floor space. It was designed in the style of a Spanish mission and covered nearly 7 acres. The pennant is in excellent shape, save for a small hole on the upper edge. The colors look bold and very saturated still. <r<r The third pennant is a navy colored version of the second pennant, except instead of the California Building, the Yacht harbor is featured. The Yacht Harbor was where many of the aquatic and carnival type attractions took place. It is one of the few areas of the exposition which remain today. This pennant is in amazing condition with no noticeable damage. The colors look bold and vibrant. <r<r The fourth pennant in this lot is teal colored and features the text, "San Francisco- Tower of Jewels- Official Souvenir 1915." Depicted on the pennant is the Tower of Jewels and the official seal of the exposition. The Tower of Jewels was the center piece of the exposition. It was over 43 stories tall and was covered with individually hanging jewels. The condition of this pennant is still good. Although it is significantly faded the image is still crisp and sharp. There are several small holes on the pennant but none affect the integrity of the image. <r<r The fifth pennant is purple in color, and features Columbia holding a standard bearing the name of the Exposition and the official souvenir logo. She is standing behind the official seal of the fair, along with a large animal. Next to this, is the Column of Progress as viewed from the Court of the Universe. The Court of the Universe was the largest of five courts and represented a meeting place of the Eastern and Western hemispheres, and each side of the court was decorated as such. From this court one could see the Column of Progress, which was modeled directly from Trajan's column in Rome. It represented the expositions dedication to technology and world advancement. The pennant is in good condition aside from some fading on the face of the pennant. There are also several holes in the pennant. <r<r The sixth and final pennant is navy blue and white in color and features a birds eye view of the entire fair grounds, along with a small bouquet of flowers surrounding the official seal of exposition. The fair grounds covered over 635 acres of land, birds eye views were very popular for such large grounds. This pennant is in excellent condition, save for a slight amount of soiling on the white upper part. <r<r An amazing lot for the world's fair enthusiast!
