Sitting Bull by D.F. Barry
Wonderful image of the Lakota Leader, also nicknamed Slon-he or “Slow”; (c. 1831 – 1890) Sitting Bull was a Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux holy man who led his people as a war chief during Indian War period. He toured briefly with the Buffalo Bill Wild West and became a friend of W.F. Cody. He was killed by Indian agency police on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation during an attempt to arrest him and prevent him from supporting the Ghost Dance movement. In this image he wears a full train eagle feather headdress and carries a stone club. David F. Barry (1854-1934) photographed most of the chiefs and participants victorious in General George Armstrong Custer’s 7th U.S. Cavalry debacle at the Battle of Little Bighorn including Gall, Rain-In-The-Face, Sitting Bull, Custer Scout Curley, Red Cloud, and young-Man-Afraid-of-His-Horses. One the most noted frontier photographers of the western expansion. Condition is excellent with very small water spot and slight lifting on corner of image. Tape marks on back of card not affecting the image.
