Provenance:
Gogarty family;
Private collection, Co. Galway
Noll was the son of Orpen’s friend and contemporary, Oliver St. John Gogarty (1878-1957). Around 1913 or thereabouts, Orpen painted a portrait each of Oliver and Noll, both of which were exhibited at the RHA of that year. More recently, the oil portrait of Noll was hung in the new Irish wing of the National Gallery, on loan from the Gogarty family. The present sketch is thought to date to around the same period as the oil, possibly made whilst Orpen was a guest of the Gogarty household. The drawing comes with a letter of valuation from art dealer and restorer James Gorry, dated 3 September 1987 (attached at reverse).
