Addressed by Scott on verso of third page to: "Robert Southey Esqr/Kerwich/Cumberland" Clear "NOV 29 1825 W E" postmark. Concerning publisher John Murray's treatment of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Thanks to Lord Byron's intervention years earlier, Murray had accepted three of Coleridge's works for publication, including "Kubla Khan". In part: "Whatever you may complain of with respect to Murrays conduct was wholly unknown to me. Till the middle of rather the end of October I had no more idea of Lockharts being the Manager of the Quarterly Union as my being brought in the copy of the review...In respect to Mr. Coleridge nothing would give me more pain than the idea that either Lockhart or I were edging him out of a lucrative and honourable situation. The situation was offered to Lockhart by Mr Murray as open and disengaged- he put the question whether Mr. Coleridge retiring was a thing determined on & he received a positive answer in the affirmative. He had no access to Mr Coleridge personally but never doubted that a full explanation had taken place between Mr Murray & him. The first question I asked was concerning Mr Coleridges connection with the Review & I was assured it terminated with the New Years commencement...As for Joannes de Mevaires I think his conduct to you is inadvisable but I am perfectly convincved it arose out of an unintentional curiosity. Byron called him the most homourously Gods bookseller and I am sure it was not and could not be any depreciatory feeling of the great services you have rendered to the Quarterly to which we can all bear witness...." Minor soiling and light stains.
