Lot of 2. E&MJ Vol 110 locates this company in the Black Hills near the Homestake. The superintendent in 1879 was F.A. Babcock. According to Nuggets to Neutrinos: The Homestake Story, the claim was located on Oct. 23, 1876 in Sawpit Gulch near Central City, Dakota Territory. The owners of the claim were Chris Ruth and William Lander. They constructed a 10 stamp mill and sank two shallow shafts. By 1880, those shafts were 100 feet deep with 2,500 feet of drifting done. The ore was not profitable and the mine closed that year. It was renamed and taken over by the Columbus Mining Company. 1) Rare proof stock certificate. dated April 1879. Inc. in New York. Printed by ABN. Allegorical vignettes of women and children plus a mining vignette and a dog vignette. Punched through signature lines. Very fine. 2) Almost identical design to first (slightly different dimensions), but this has been filled in with fake information designed to fool collectors! Has the fake signatures of company president Jno. McGinnis Jr. and and treasurer E.W. McGinnis. (Al Adams Gold Rush Memorabilia Collection) Date: Location: Black Hills, Dakotas HWAC# 59097
