Sir John Lavery RA RHA RSA (1856-1941)
Sir John Lavery RA RHA RSA (1856-1941) CIGARETTE FACTORY GIRL, SEVILLE signed and dated [1892] lower right oil on canvas laid on board 24 by 19cm., 9.5 by 7.5in. In his monograph on Lavery, Professor Kenneth McConkey relates the circumstances which gave rise to this small study: After the second of Lavery's visits to Tangier, in the early months of 1892, the artist "returned to Scotland via Seville in April of that year with Alexander Mann. In a letter to his wife, who was remaining in Tangier, Mann relates that Lavery had made a little sketch of the bullring and though he caught a bad cold, he had also been sketching at the tobacco factory" (ref. Kenneth McConkey, Sir John Lavery, Canongate Press, Edinburgh, 1993, p.86). The subject in the present painting is one of the workers Lavery observed in the tobacco factory in Seville. With particular reference to this work, Professor McConkey wrote that "the picture does indeed seem to be a rather lovely sketch and it appears entirely characteristic of Lavery's oeuvre at that period" (private correspondence with a former owner of the work, 2 June 1997).€25000-€30000 (IR £19500-£23400 approx.)
