Sir John Floyer (1649-1734) was an Oxford-educated English physician who treated the fabled Dr. Samuel Johnson in their home town of Litchfield. An advocate of cold bathing as a treatment for a variety of diseases, Floyer also introduced the concept of taking the pulse and developed early research on respiratory ailments, including emphysema and asthma. A bookplate has been attached inside the front cover.
