Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959) Watercolour, Study for "The Ford", Signed A J Munnings, 10.5 x 12.5 ins. This work is a preparatory sketch for "The Ford", one of Munnings finest "grey-weather" canvases. Munnings worked on the picture at Mendham, behind the mill on the Waveney, where farm horses watered. He was struck by the grey water and dark reflections broken by lines of the current. He wrote about the composition "cutting out the sky-using the distant country for the top portion of the picture. Ponies, water, reflections filled the rest of the space." Munnings painted three large versions of The Ford, one of which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1911. The other two are in the Wolverhampton Art Gallery and the Sir Alfred Munnings Art Museum in Dedham. An oil on canvas sketch for The Ford was sold at Christie's, June 2002 for £1,650,000. £20,000-25,000
