Currency:USD Category:Collectibles Start Price:1,500.00 USD Estimated At:2,500.00 - 4,500.00 USD
Sioux Twisted Stem Catlinite Bowl Pipe 19th C.
The lot features an excellent twisted wood heavily carved stem with catlinite pipe bowl attributed to the Sioux Native American Indians of the Plains dating to the 19th Century. The piece has a heavily carved solid wood stem showing an elongated bell like smoking tip flowing into a rounded three ridge section framing at the top and bottom the twisted stem. The piece shows remnants of black and red ocher mineral pigment polychrome painting which has since worn away from many years of honest age and use. The piece is accompanied by an “L” shaped carved stone catlinite Minnesota pipe stone bowl which has a deep red coloring and smooth shiny finish from much age and use, a nice patina. Two nearly identical examples with heavy basket like twisting, a unique design compared to most twist pipes, can be seen from Heritage 2013 sale and Cowans 2018 sale. Truly a fair third to fourth quarter of the 1800’s piece with honest authentic patina and age. Measures overall together 23 1/8”L, stem is 20 1/8”L, bowl is 3 7/8”L by 2.25”H by 1” thick.
