Sioux Spontoon War Club circa Late 19th Century
This is an exceptional Spontoon War Club from circa late 19th Century collected from the Santee Sioux Native American Indians. The war club features a hand carved hard wood haft showing a mellow patina and minor wear from age and use. The haft also shows many brass covered iron trade tacks in a geometric pattern and a carved round end piece where a drop of feathers or beaded thong might have been placed. The war club has a hand forged trade Spontoon style blade inset into it. The blade shows remnants of numbers in sequence engraved/stamped into the metal on both sides, as if this was forged from a tool of sorts. The inside edge of the haft shows a mineral ocher red painted. Reverend Joseph Ward collected the piece around circa 1900 or so and then displayed at the Yankton Indian College Museum collection until 1987 when the college closed and the museum collection was sold off. This is truly and excellent authentic edged weapon from the High Plains and shows well preserved condition. Measures overall 38”L with a 6.5”L blade that is 2”W.
