Sioux Spontoon War Club Tomahawk 19th Century
This is an extraordinary authentic Northern Plains Native American Indian spontoon pike war club tomahawk dating to the 19th Century from the Sioux Indians. The piece shows an outstanding blacksmith hand-forged iron Revolutionary War style spontoon pike head with stylized spontoon shape, upward curled basal processes and downward facing, flaring processes. The blade shows a medium ridge running down the center, a documented authentic early weapons feature, with a weeping heart cutout at the center. The war club tomahawk is attached to a solid wood haft handle showing adornment of extensive hot file branding, brass trade tacks of various sizes in a linear design holding a wrap of trade clothe and hide at the gripping area with a long frilly, fringed Indian tanned hide drop. For reference see Francis, “Rare American Indian Weapons Volume 1” (2018) page 39 for a similar esoteric example. Provenance: The ex-collection of Cyrus Eaton Estate in London, England an Tom Hardy in Ohio. This example shows a fine authentic original patina from much age and use and is a fantastic piece with terrific art appeal. Measures overall 19 inches in length with a head that is 8 ¾ inches by 2 inches.
