This is a wonderful Oglala Lakota Sioux beaded knife sheath with exceptionally rare original Pine Ridge Indian Agency Snake Brand Sheffield Bowie knife from the 19th century. The Red Cloud Agency was established in 1871 on the North Platte River near Fort Laramie in eastern Wyoming, primarily for the Oglala Sioux Indians. The agency was later moved to White Clay Creek in 1878 and was renamed the Pine Ridge Indian Agency at this time. The White Clay Creek Pine Ridge Indian Agency has been servicing the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, earlier called the Greater Sioux Reservation since its inception in 1871 (only a few years after the creation of the Greater Sioux Reservation in 1868). Pine Ridge Indian Reservation was established in 1889 by the Great Sioux Agreement of March 2, 1889, 25 Stat. 888 by the U.S. Congress essentially breaking up the Great Sioux Reservation (setting boundaries for six reduced reservations). The lot features an exceptionally rare authentic Snake Brand Sheffield England Bowie Knife with wood handles branded on both sides, “Pine Ridge Indian Agency”. The knife shows the snake and line hallmark and is marked, “Snake Brand Sheffield” (this is the increasingly scarcer larger Snake Brand knife). The sheath shows a Parfleche Rawhide construction wrapped in Indian tanned hide showing wonderful 19th century glass trade seed beads in chalk white, semi-transparent dark blue, green, semi-transparent pink, semi-transparent, semi-transparent padre blue, Cheyenne pink, and semi-transparent greasy yellow. The sheath also shows various tin jingle cone covered fringe pieces along the center. The piece shows very good well preserved condition. Knife is 13 5/8”L with a 9 1/16”L blade that is 1.75”W. Sheath is 15.5”L (with top strap) x 3.75”W.
