The lot features a fantastic original authentic bow and arrow set from the Sioux Native American Indians dating to the 19th Century. The bow shows a hand carved solid wood construction that has been scraped, bent and notched at the ends. The bow has a rich red ocher mineral pigment paint across the entire surface. Also included are three authentic matched arrows which originally showed a cut iron tip which is attached via a sinew wrap (one original iron arrowhead remains, with all three still having the sinew remnants) and accented by a dark mineral pigment ocher paint. At the base of each arrows shows remnants of the original feather fletching and sinew wrap which culminates in the hand carved notched nock and is adorned with red and black mineral pigment ocher painted stripes. The set dates to circa 1880-1890 and is in overall good condition. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. The set shows well preserved museum quality condition with some chips and breaks, which is expected for such an early age. The bow measures 34.25”L x 3/4”W and 3/4” thick at the widest spot. The arrows are 27.5”L, 26.5”L and 23.5”L respectively. These truly are fantastic Indian Wars era originals with exceptional provenance.
