Sioux Polychrome Painted Arrows c. 1850-1880 (3)
The lot features three original Sioux Native American Indian early arrows. The arrows are from circa 1850-1880 and appear to be in overall well-preserved good condition for their age. The first arrow features a stripped wood construction being scrapped and finished with red and green mineral ocher paint having a forged iron arrowhead being wedged into the cut slot in the wood and sinew wrapped to secure the piece into place. At the end of the arrow shows an expertly carved notch and the polychrome painted finish with stripped feather fletching also being held into place with sinew wrappings. The next two arrows also show a stripped and scrapped wood construction with notched top section with sinew wrapping which previously held a metal arrowhead which is no longer present. At the rear both show an expertly carved notch with red and black ocher mineral paint and sinew wrapped feather arrow fletching. Provenance: The arrows were previously sold by Allard Auction in the 1990’s to the current collector. The longest examples measures 24.5”L and the arrow head is approximately 3”L by ¾”W.
