The lot features a stretched rawhide parfleche war shield with bent wood hoop from the Sioux Native American Indians. The piece shows a polychrome mineral painted surface with the large painting of a Great American Bison Buffalo in brown which is accented by a three layer border of chevrons which could represent mountains or a storm along with three Thunderbird figures. At the base of the front of the shield shows four painted circles with a drop of Indian hide and horse hair (horsehair) which is wrapped in red shroud trade clothe. The shield itself shows a stripped hide sewn construction with banded rawhide crossed back and a brown earth rubbed finish. The shield measures 14 1/4" in diameter with the tassel measuring 15 1/2" long. The shield shows a good overall condition. From a Billings, Montana collection. The shield's age is unknown.
