The piece has a pestle or maul design with willow branch wooden handle that is covered in Indian tanned hide wrapping. The stone has a deep ground groove which holds the willow branch handle. The stone shows a smooth flat to slightly curved surface. The piece is very similar to the example on display at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana circa 1870 and other rare examples. The piece is well preserved and in good overall condition. Pemmican was prepared from the lean meat of large game such as Buffalo / Bison, Elk, Deer or Moose. Measures overall 8.5"L x 3.5"W x 2.75"D.
