Sioux Medicine Man Beaded & Quilled Bundle 19th C
This is an unusual medicine man bundle from the Sioux Native American Indians showing beadwork and quillwork and believed to be from the 19th Century. The piece shows a Buffalo Parfleche rawhide top pouch which is covered in 19th Century glass trade seed beads of chalk white and cobalt which show two long fringe of Indian tanned hide with porcupine quillwork with a yellow coloring along with rolled tin jingle cones and drops of four each number one wampum dentalium shells. The center strand of Indian tanned hide extends through the top of the pouch and beneath holds the large prominent cream and orange swirl shell. The tie is dyed with a red mineral ocher with yellow ocher additional ties. The the top is the old collection tag which reads, "R.O. Sweeny Pharmacist and Dealer in Medicines, Fancy Goods, Toilet Articles No. 211 Third St., Saint Paul. Indian Curiosities On Exhibition and for Sale." The tag is marked on the back with pencil which is not discernable. This piece measures 16 1/2" long overall by 1 3/4" wide at the top with the shell measuring 5" long by 1 1/2" wide.
