This is a rare circa 1890 Sioux Native American Indian Ghost Dance horn wand that was collected from the Pine Ridge Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. The piece shows a wood haft handle with wonderful colorful beaded linear geometric design with all glass trade seed beads with a period correct age in chalk white, Cheyenne, pink greasy yellow, semi-transparent green, semi-transparent red and cobalt. The piece shows two steer horns at the top which are upturned and secured to the piece with a haft going through the top and parfleche rawhide wrap with red ocher mineral dye which is adorned with dyed red horse tail hair, a single hawk trade bell and pieces of rabbit fur. These types of horn clubs first began to appear in early 1890 and were made for use during the Ghost Dance activities as documented by James Mooney in his 1896 book, “The Ghost Dance and the Sioux Outbreak of 1890.” Two photographs from the pages of this book are digitally show for comparison. The club measures overall 28.5”L by 6.5”W.
